The Full Spectrum of AEC Marketing

By Luke Carothers

AEC marketing rarely fits into a single format anymore.  One firm may tell its story through drone footage and immersive digital campaigns, while another builds trust through newsletters, internal campaigns, or community events.  Some campaigns recruit talent.  Others strengthen client relationships, explain technical expertise, or elevate brand visibility.

That range is exactly what the Marketing Excellence Awards are designed to recognize.  The program celebrates the full spectrum of marketing across the AEC industry, from brand launches and integrated campaigns to video storytelling, websites, publications, and internal engagement efforts

The strongest submissions show strategy, purpose, and a clear understanding of audience.  They demonstrate how marketing helps firms communicate complex ideas, strengthen culture, and build meaningful connections in a competitive industry.

AEC Marketing is Bigger Than One Campaign Type

The role of marketing inside AEC firms has evolved over the years, and marketing teams are no longer focused only on proposals and brochures.  Today’s firms are expected to balance business development, recruiting, thought leadership, employee engagement, and brand visibility across multiple platforms at once

This evolution is reflected in the Marketing Excellence Awards categories.  A single firm may launch a rebrand, produce project videos, manage social campaigns, create internal culture initiatives, and develop technical website content all at the same time

MEA categories like Brand Identity and Integrated Marketing/Brand Awareness typically celebrate visibility campaigns, while Newsletters, Video, and Drone Video highlight storytelling and communication.  Internal Marketing and Event categories recognize another important reality.  Some of the most impactful marketing efforts happen inside the firm or through direct community engagement.

Together, these categories are meant to reflect what modern AEC marketing has become.  Great campaigns have to do more than look good.  They need to help firms explain who they are, what they believe, and why their work matters.

Categories that Showcase Brand, Storytelling, and Engagement

The Marketing Excellence Awards reflect the many ways AEC firms communicate with clients, employees, and communities.  Some categories focus on visibility and brand positioning, while others highlight storytelling, education, and audience engagement.  Together, they showcase the full range of modern AEC marketing.

Categories like Brand Identity, Integrated Marketing/Brand Awareness, Website, Social Media, and Publication recognize campaigns designed to strengthen market presence and communicate expertise.

The 2025 Website category winner from P2S is a strong example.  Their “Transform Decarbonization Challenges into Success Stories” campaign turned technical sustainability content into an interactive digital experience using animated visuals, segmented content, case studies, and a scrollable guide that simplified a complex topic while reinforcing the firm’s experience.

Other categories focus more directly on storytelling.  Video, Drone Video, and Newsletter entries highlight how firms use visual media and content strategy to create stronger audience connections.

The 2024 winner from the Video category, “Who is B&W” from Baxter & Woodman, used animation, music, and concise messaging to communicate the firm’s identity in under one minute.  Still more, WSB’s 2024 winner from the Newsletter category showed that even traditional formats remain effective when paired with thoughtful content strategy by blending project highlights, acquisition news, infographics, and short-form articles for a wide range of audiences.

Across every category, the strongest entries do more than look good.  They communicate expertise, tell a focused story, and create meaningful connections.

Categories Focused on Culture and Connection

Not every impactful marketing campaign is client-facing.  Categories like Internal Marketing and Events recognize the vital role marketing plays in shaping culture, strengthening communication, and building community connections.

Internal campaigns often support recruiting, employee engagement, leadership communication, and retention efforts.  Event campaigns highlight how firms create experiences that bring together employees, clients, and communities around a shared purpose.

These categories reflect an important reality across the AEC industry.  Marketing is no longer separate from culture.  The strongest firms understand that how they communicate internally can be just as important as how they communicate externally.

More Than Just Awards

There is no single formula for a successful campaign, and the strongest entries come in many different formats.  Some firms tell their story through immersive websites and video.  Others create impact through newsletters, events, social campaigns, or internal initiatives.

What connects the best entries is a clarity of purpose.  They communicate expertise, strengthen relationships, and help firms stand out in meaningful ways.  As AEC marketing continues to evolve, the MEAs will continue to evolve alongside it, creating new opportunities to recognize the creativity, strategy, and storytelling shaping the future of the industry.
